I can't answer as I don't have Anthony Bourdain's Travel Budget to try all of the $7 tourist traps, though I imagine, despite my inner voice telling me it's just a kind of natural sea cookie, it would taste like the rest of the deep-fried exoticisms: salty oil. True, the consistency of the silkworms was like eating a shrimp with its full armor, but the payoff was much less exciting, though quite tasty. Apparently the snakeskin is like eating chewy, tasteless rubber.

Re: Beijing Food Markets

really can't imagine gnawing on a starfish... is the endoskeleton perhaps piped full of a fruity conserve? silkworms wouldn't be a problem. imagine them being like a creamy shrimp!

wonderful food photography, as always.

Re: Le Biere Trappiste

If you like Belgian beers and can read French, get an eye on www.bieres-belges.com.

Re: Spicy Green Peanut Curry

Word Nathalie...you know where the goodness lies. It is amazing what the Japanese do with Shiso. They use the leaf in a variety of dishes, ranging from savory to sweet to sour. It is very versatile and quite tasty.
